7. Chaos
Starting things off, we have the water deity that debuted in 1998’s Sonic Adventure, Chaos. For those of you who don’t know Chaos is a mutated Chao that guarded the master emerald and the Chao that lived around it thousands of years ago. But everything changed when the war hungry ancestors of Knuckles stormed the master emerald shrine in order to use its powers for nefarious purposes. Thus they stormed towards it and trampled the Chao to death in the process. Infuriated, Chaos used the negative energy from the chaos emeralds to transform into the monster known as perfect chaos and wiped out the echidna tribe except for the princess Tikal who sealed him inside the master emerald. In the present day, Eggman awakened Chaos from his slumber, leading to a chain of events that lead to him becoming Perfect Chaos once again, which Sonic had to stop once and for all.
Chaos would be a nice antagonist for a film as it would be interesting to see how Sonic and the gang face of against an elemental monster that takes on a new form with each new Chaos Emerald he absorbs. And can you imagine seeing his iconic attack on station square with the budget of a Hollywood blockbuster behind it? That would be a sight to see!
6. Fang the Sniper
A villain from the classic era of Sonic games, Fang the Sniper is a treasure hunter and bounty hunter that wields a pistol as his main weapon. Aside from cameos and appearances in the comics, not much has really been done with Fang. But an appearance on the film side of things can really turn things around for this character and endear him to a new generation of fans. I can definitely see Fang being the central villain of a live action tv show taking on jobs from the best paying clients and maybe the heroes opposing him can be the Chaotix. He’d also be great as a supporting villain in a feature film. As for who could play him well it would preferably have to be someone who could pull off an Australian accent since Fang often speaks with one in the comics. Maybe someone like Corey Burton or Alan Tudyk.
5. Mephiles the Dark
The infamous time traveling villain from Sonic 06, this guy left quite the impact on Sonic fans despite his only appearance being what is damn near universally agreed to be the worst game in the franchise. His sadism, calculating nature, and being the only villain in the franchise to kill Sonic (even though it was later undone by Princess Elise’s infamous kiss) had fans wanting to see more of him despite him being erased from existence at the end of Sonic 06. Though its a long shot, I think it would be cool to see Mephiles on the big screen, especially in the hands of more competent storytellers so that he can menace a new generation of Sonic fans. And they should definitely get Dan Green back to voice him as his vocal performance is bar none the biggest reason why Mephiles has such a huge following and you can clearly tell Green was having a lot of fun playing him. If it ain't broke don't fix it.
4. Infinite
One of the primary antagonists of Sonic Forces, Infinite is a jackal that’s in possession of an item called the phantom Ruby, which allows him to create powerful and deadly illusions to fight his opponents. The illusions can range from entire locations, copies of other characters that are just as strong as the originals, and things such as an entire sun! Unfortunately, despite Infinites cool power set and amazing design, the writing for him in Forces came up short, hell everything in the story for that game did. But the main reason why I’m putting him on this list is because of the potential he has. Someone like Infinite could really shine under the pen of a writer that actually knows what the hell they’re doing. Just imagine seeing him use his illusions to give his enemies that work on the big screen. Not to mention he can really make both the characters and the audience question what’s real and what’s not which could make him an excellent psychological threat as well as a physical one.
As for who could play him, they could always get Liam O’ Brian to come back but if they get a celebrity maybe Adam Driver? It wouldn’t be his first time playing a mask wearing edge lord.
3. Surge and Kit
Ok I’m gonna cheat a bit here. These two are recent additions to the franchise via the IDW Sonic comics. Though they’re still fresh, I along with a lot of other fans fell in love with these two mainly due to their dynamic, power set and backstory. A fennec fox and tenrec that were kidnapped by Dr. Starline and brainwashed into being counterparts to Sonic and Tails. Surge having the power to generate electricity and Kitsunami having the power to control water. Surge is arrogant and bloodlusted while Kit is quiet and submissive.
While being new, I love the dynamic that these two have with Surge being the big sister bully to Kit. But the biggest reason I want to see these two on the big screen is because of their tragic backstory. The comics did a brilliant job of making readers sympathize with Surge and Kit as they have no memory of their previous lives after Starline kidnapped and experimented of them and it would be a treat to see their story adapted to film. As for who could play them, I’d get Grey Delisle for Surge and Amy Palant for Kit.
2. Dr. Starline
Another major villain from the Sonic IDW comics. Starline is a platypus that admires Dr. Eggman. But as the comic progresses, Starline grows disillusioned with his idol and eventually decides to become an independent villain in his own right. Starline would be an excellent choice to fill in the evil scientist role should Jim Carrey hold true to his word on retiring from acting. Plus his calm and calculating demeanor would be a nice change of pace after the hammy and energetic performance of Carrey. Not to mention he could make for some entertaining action scenes with his gear such as the spurs on his heels along with his tricore. As for who could play him I think Tom Hiddleston would be excellent in the role of Starline.
1. Metal Sonic
Last but certainly not least we have one of Sonic’s greatest foes. His robotic doppelgänger Metal Sonic. Making his debut in 1993’s Sonic Cd, Metal Sonic made his first impression on fans by kidnapping Amy Rose, which culminated in a climatic race in stardust speedway to which Metal lost. Metal Sonic is one of the series most iconic villains and serves as one of Sonic’s most dangerous enemies with his ability to copy the powers of others.
Metal Sonic is a must for this franchise because his appearance would be the ultimate culmination of the rivalry between Sonic and Eggman. What better way to cap things off than a robotic Doppelgänger created by the arch nemesis? Not to mention if Carrey is truly done with acting after the second Sonic film, Metal Sonic would be the most logical choice. Just imagine Metal taking control of the Eggman Empire much like how he did in Sonic Heroes, his conflict of believing himself to be the real Sonic and how compelling it could be. Not to mention him turning into Neo Metal Sonic and audiences getting to see him use his shape shifting abilities T-1000 style could make him an extremely menacing foe for Sonic and the gang to fight. As for who could play him, just get Ryan Drummond to reprise his role. Plus it could be sweet to see Ben Scwartz Sonic go up against a character voiced by someone who is voiced by the first English voice actor for Sonic in the games.
Conclusion
Sonic’s movie franchise is already one of the most successful video game to film adaptations thanks to being worked on by people who have a clear love for the source material and whatever the future holds for the blue blur on film, I hope we also get to see a great rogues gallery that’ll do their best to give us their worst. Thanks for reading.
