So earlier last month, Paramount dropped the bombshell that not only is a third movie in the works but there’s also a live action Knuckles series that’ll be exclusive to Paramount plus with Idris Elba reprising his role. And keep in mind this is all before the second movie is even out in theaters at the time that I’m writing this, which should speak volumes about how much confidence paramount has in this franchise. Needless to say it’s a very exciting time to be a Sonic fan.
But with the future ahead of us in terms of films I just couldn’t help but wonder about other characters in the franchise such as Amy or Shadow and who Paramount could get to play them. Well today I’m going to share with y’all who I would personally recruit to play the rest of Sonic’s friends should they make it to the big screen. Now for this I’m going to have two categories: Returning voice actors and celebrities. With Tails’ voice actress from the games playing him in the films, that tells me right there that some of the other voice actors from the games have a very real chance of voicing their respective characters in the films. Next are the celebrity voice actors, and if you’ve seen any adaptation of a video game or cartoon in the past decade you know that getting a celebrity voice actor is pretty much inevitable. But don’t worry, the fan casts that I have on this list are who I personally think would have voices that would perfectly fit the character. Without further ado, let’s get started.
Returning Voice Actors
For returning voice actors there are five characters in particular that I can see retaining their game voice actors, E-123 Omega, Blaze and Team Chaotix (Espio, Charmy, and Vector). The reason being for Omega and Charmy is due to the nature of their voices. Omega is a robot, and whoever is playing him will have their voices modified to sound like a robot. Therefore I think getting a celebrity to play Omega would be redundant because again, their voice would be modified to where you can’t tell that it’s them so I think it’s best to just bring one of Omegas voice actors from the games over. Preferably Jon St. Jon or Andrew Rennalls since Maddie Blaustein is sadly no longer with us and Vic Mignogna has been embroiled in controversy lately.
As for Charmy, well much like Tails, he’s a little boy. There’s hardly any big name celebrities that can convincingly pull off a little boys voice so Paramount is better off getting Charmy’s voice actress from the games, who funnily enough is also the voice actress for Tails: Colleen O’Shaughnessey. As for characters that I’d personally prefer to keep their game voice actors it would be Espio, Vector, and Blaze for me. My reason being is that for one thing their voices are fine the way they are currently and I honestly can’t think of any celebrities that can pull off the respective roles so hey, if it ain’t broke don’t fix it. Now with the returning actors out of the way, let’s see which famous actors they could possibly get to voice some of the more notable members of Sonic’s supporting cast.
Celebrity Voice Actors
Now for this section I’m going to share which big name celebrities I’d get to have as these particular characters. The reason why I’m going with celebrities for these characters is because these are the ones that are very well known to the general public and I feel that if Paramount were to introduce them, they would want their inclusion to be a very big deal and therefore they’d want to get an actor with star power to play them. So without further ado, here are some actors and actresses that I think would be a great fit for these parts!
Kristin Bell as Amy
Known best for her role as Veronica Mars and Anna from Frozen, I think Kristen Bell would be a wonderful choice for Amy. In order to play Amy one needs to be able to convey her tender and caring side, being bubbly and upbeat, and her fierce temper. Bell convinced me that she can pull off Amy after I rewatched both of the Frozen films and her performance as Anna shows she definitely has the voice that fits a teenage girl. Not to mention in recent years Amy has greatly matured, and in the current idw comics she was one of the leaders of the resistance, I think Bell can also pull off the more serious side of Amy using her performances as Lucy Stillman from the Assassins Creed games. Plus her performance as Veronica Mars proves that she can pull off the snarky side of her as well. All in all, Bell is a very well rounded actress that would be a great choice to bring Amy to life on the big screen.
Adam Driver as Shadow
Ah yes the ultimate life form. Shadow is the most popular character in the franchise right after Sonic himself so you just know Paramount is gonna get a big star to play him if/when he’s introduced to the films. In my eyes the best Actor for the job is Adam Driver. Known best for his role as Kylo Ren in the Star Wars sequel trilogy, Driver would seamlessly pull off the deep brooding voice that Shadow has. Shadow is bar none one of the most complex characters in the franchise, especially since he had a story arc that spanned three games in a row (Sonic Adventure 2, Sonic Heroes, and Shadow the Hedgehog). To me, Driver can perfectly capture that edge and no nonsense attitude that Shadow is known for along with the Hedgehogs more noble and caring side seen in games such as 06. All in all, Adam Driver would be the ultimate actor for the ultimate life form.
Gabrielle Union as Rouge
Now we will be moving on to another staple of Team Dark, the treasure hunter and government spy Rouge the Bat. Rouge is known for her flirtatious nature, seductive tone, and fierce determination while also showing a caring side to those she's close to. Gabrielle Union is such a well rounded actress that I have no doubt that she could pull off all these sides of Rouge with no issue at all. It also helps that Union is no stranger to voice acting as she previously voiced Nala in the Lion Guard, along with minor roles in the Proud Family and Family Guy. Overall, I think Union would be a great choice for Rouge. That and I'm getting tired of everyone fan casting Scarlett Johansson as her.
Tom Holland as Silver
Ok ok before any of you say anything let me explain. Now I’m sure if y’all have been on social media sites such as Twitter or Tumblr you might end up seeing a lot of people fan cast him in a lot of roles, naturally you end up getting sick of seeing the same person over and over again. But seriously, I think Tom would be a great fit for the hedgehog from the future.
Tom Holland usually plays characters that are very young, naive and good hearted, and all of those qualities fit Silver to a tee. Of course his most famous role, Spider-Man convinced me that he’d fit the role of Silver like a glove but his other role as Ian Lightfoot from the Pixar movie Onward also showed me he has the chops to embody Silver as well. True, fans might fan cast him as every character under the Sun, but the future would be in good hands in my opinion if he were to play Silver.
Conclusion
It has never been a more exciting time to be a Sonic fan. With the future ahead of us, I’m excited to see where the blue hedgehogs journey in the world of cinema goes from here and who Jeff Fowler and crew bring aboard to help further bring Sonic’s friends and foes to life. Let’s all hope that this franchise continues to set the bar for what film adaptations of video games should be like.
